Zitko, 54, went missing from the Lock 7 area of the C&O Canal around 6 a.m. on Jan. 6, the US Park Police originally reported.
Her body was located after someone reported finding a woman’s body in the area of Lock 5 of the park on Friday, March 8, Bethesda Magazine reports.
Park Police officially cancelled the search for Zitko on Friday, March 18 after the Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner positively identified the body as Zitko's.
Zitko was a longtime European Union delegate, according to Reuters and her LinkedIn profile. A native of Germany, Zitko served more than 25 years in the EU as a legal advisor for the delegation to the US in Washington, Reuters said. She also represented the European Commission in public hearings on tariff cases before the US International Trade Commission, according to Reuters.
While authorities have not determined the cause and manner of Zitko’s death, but police do not believe foul play was involved, Bethesda Magazine reports.
